Mistrial Declared as Jury Fails to Reach Consensus in State Trooper Case
An Ulster County jury found former trooper Baldner not guilty of murder and reckless endangerment but remains deadlocked on manslaughter after a high-speed chase crash killed an 11-year-old.
- On Thursday, an Ulster County jury acquitted former New York state trooper Christopher Baldner of murder and reckless endangerment, delivering a partial verdict in Ulster County Court, Kingston, N.Y.
- In December 2020, Baldner stopped a Dodge Journey for speeding, pepper-sprayed Tristan Goods, who fled, prompting a chase that prosecutors alleged ended when Baldner hit the SUV twice, causing it to roll and partially eject 11-year-old Monica Goods.
- Jurors asked Judge Bryan Rounds to reread manslaughter and reasonable doubt definitions, posed trooper policy and siren use questions, and twice said they were `hopelessly deadlocked`.
- After the verdict, about a dozen demonstrators marched on Wall Street outside the Ulster County Courthouse, and an unmarked patrol vehicle blocked the intersection of John and Crown streets, while Baldner embraced his wife and lawyers declined comment.
- The case has bounced through appeals and saw charges reinstated after an appeal by state Attorney General Letitia James; a conviction for second-degree manslaughter could mean up to 15 years in state prison.
