Ex-England and Premier League footballer arrested on suspicion of attempted rape
The former player was stopped at passport control and bailed until late February 2026 while Essex Police continue their investigation into a historical allegation.
Dec 3, 2025: A former England and Premier League footballer was arrested at Stansted Airport, Essex, on Sunday after Border Force officers stopped him at passport control and prevented his flight boarding.
The complaint was made several weeks ago by a former partner, and police records flagged the ex-player as wanted over a historical allegation of attempted rape.
He was taken to a nearby police station where officers processed him, taking fingerprints, a DNA sample and a photograph, and held him for several hours.
Essex Police said he has been bailed to late February 2026 and cannot be named for legal reasons while inquiries continue.
The complainant has been interviewed by specialist sex crimes officers and offered counselling, while a source called the airport arrest 'It's bizarre that he was arrested at the airport when he has been quite visible in public recently.
