Ex-aides win primaries to replace retiring Democratic House members
Former aides backed by retiring House Democrats won primaries in overwhelmingly blue districts and are all but certain to win in November, aides said.
On Tuesday, retiring Democrats Steny Hamilton Hoyer and Jerrold Nadler saw their endorsed former aides win congressional primaries, securing paths for the staffers to replace them in overwhelmingly blue districts.
With 68 members of Congress not seeking reelection this year, several retiring lawmakers have actively backed former staffers to succeed them, aiming to maintain influence over their districts' futures.
Republican Rep. Ryan Zinke endorsed his district director, Aaron Flint, who won a four-person primary earlier this month. Rep. Danny Davis backed state Rep. La Shawn Ford in a contested race.
After winning the Democratic primary, Adrian Boafo credited his mentor, Hoyer. "It's time to pass the torch to a new generation of leaders," Boafo said.
The endorsed candidates are all but certain to win in November due to overwhelmingly blue districts. Alme won the Chicago-area primary with 100% of the vote, exemplifying the pattern.
