Thousands of teaching positions are unfilled, and the teacher shortage is being largely alleviated by rehiring retired people, said Tünde Tóth, vice president of the Teachers' Trade Union (PSZ). According to advocates, the severe teacher shortage directly endangers the education and development of students, while the system is overloaded and the supply of new teachers is uncertain.
Franja Žišt writes about the shortage of teachers in his commentary We are looking for teachers. He emphasizes that as many as a third of teachers will retire in the next ten years, so we need to agree on the real number of staff shortages now and find the right solutions. He also reminds us that not everyone can be a teacher, and that we have managed to devalue the profession in society.
