Evenepoel Wins 'Special' Tour De France Individual Time-Trial
The world time trial champion beat Tadej Pogačar by 28 seconds and opened a bigger gap over Isaac del Toro.
- On Tuesday, Remco Evenepoel won the 16th stage of the Tour de France, completing the 26.1-kilometer individual time trial in 32 minutes, 19 seconds and shaving 28 seconds off Tadej Pogacar's lead.
- Starting in Evian-les-Bains beside Lake Geneva, the route featured a 16.4K climb up the Côte de Larringes before a technical descent to Thonon-les-Bains. "On Belgian national day, it's pretty special," Evenepoel said.
- Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider Florian Lipowitz crashed six kilometres from the finish and abandoned the Tour with an apparent broken collarbone. Evenepoel called it "a bittersweet pill to swallow."
- The victory extended Evenepoel's lead over Isaac del Toro to two minutes and 19 seconds, while Pogacar maintained a four-minute, 32-second overall advantage despite narrowly avoiding the same corner where Lipowitz fell.
- As the Tour continues toward the July 26 finish in Paris, French teenager Paul Seixas moved closer to the final podium spot in the fight for third place behind the Slovenian leader.
