Evan Kiely kicks winning field goal on final play as The Citadel tops South Carolina State 34-31
The Citadel overcame a 14-point deficit after Gavin Garcia ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and Evan Kiely finished the winning drive.
On Saturday, Evan Kiely kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired, lifting The Citadel to a 34-31 victory over South Carolina State at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
The Citadel dominated with a 448-346 total yard advantage, led by running back Gavin Garcia's 167 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Quentin Hayes contributed 127 passing yards and two scores.
Damir Abdullah caught a 55-yard touchdown pass that extended The Citadel's lead to 31-17 late in the third quarter. Nick Billoups later connected with Michael Lorino on a 34-yard pass during the game-winning drive.
South Carolina State rallied to tie the game 31-31 when quarterback Keely Watson led a late drive capped by Josh Shaw's 6-yard touchdown run with 8 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Next Saturday, The Citadel hosts East Tennessee State while South Carolina State travels to Charleston Southern. Both teams continue their schedules following the back-and-forth contest.
