A little less plaice, but just as much herring as last year: EU countries allow fishermen to catch more fish than the Commission has proposed. Environmentalists are not satisfied.
The German Baltic Sea fishermen are allowed to continue fishing for small quantities of herring in the coming year. This prolongs an exemption, as the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs announced. It applies to coastal fishermen with small boats and passive fishing gears, such as set-aside nets.
The EU Commission has called for an end to overfishing in the Baltic Sea. However, German fishermen are allowed to continue almost as before after a decision.
The Baltic Sea's engine is at risk of breaking down. Critics believe this could be the result of politicians "playing with fire" when it comes to fishing quotas.
German Baltic Sea fishermen are allowed to catch small quantities of herring despite the ban on fishing. EU ministers decided this at the urging of Germany.
