Euro Zone Business Lending Slows as Credit Growth Loses Momentum
Bank lending to euro zone businesses slowed slightly in August after remaining relatively strong earlier in the year, according to European Central Bank data. The figures offer another indication of how corporate demand for credit is developing amid changing borrowing costs and economic conditions.
The European Central Bank raised interest rates in the eurozone in June for the first time since autumn 2023, by a quarter of a percentage point, to curb inflation.
The annual growth of bank loans to enterprises slowed very slightly in August (+4.2% after +4.4% in July). The figures remain below the historical averages, while the rates are fairly high in the short and medium term.
Lending to companies in the eurozone weakened slightly in August, after key interest rates were raised for the first time since autumn 2023, preliminary data from the European Central Bank (ECB) showed on Friday.
