The European Parliament voted on Wednesday to grant the Committee on Security and Defence standing committee powers. The decision was adopted by an overwhelming majority - 448 MEPs were in favour, 161 against and 40 abstained.

The EU parliamentarians have decided to set up a standing health committee (SANT). After months of negotiations, the decision was made in the last plenary session of the year on Wednesday (18 December) in Strasbourg.

Until now, the topic of public health was not represented in a separate specialist committee of the EU Parliament, but was negotiated together with food safety and environmental issues. As a result of the corona pandemic, calls became louder to create a separate committee area for this in order to give health issues a higher political priority. This has now been implemented.

Bisher war das Thema öffentliche Gesundheit nicht in einem gesonderten Fachausschuss des EU-Parlaments vertreten, sondern wurde zusammen mit Lebensmittelsicherheit- und Umweltfragen verhandelt. Infolge der Corona-Pandemie wurden Forderungen lauter, hierfür einen eigenen Ausschussbereich zu schaffen, um Gesundheitsthemen einen höheren politischen Stellenwert zu geben. Das wurde nun umgesetzt.
