Meta faces EU investigation over child safety risks

Meta Platforms' social media sites Facebook and Instagram will be investigated for potential breaches of EU online content rules relating to child safety, EU regulators said today, a move that could lead to hefty fines.

Since the digital services law came into force, which requires platforms to protect minors, the European Commission has opened four infringement procedures against Meta, two against TikTok and one against AliExpress.

The European Commission announced on Thursday that it had opened an investigation into Meta over the protection of minors on its Facebook and Instagram platforms, DPA and Reuters reported, citing Agerpres.

The European Union (EU) on Thursday (May 16) started a formal investigation into Facebook and Instagram on allegations that the Meta-owned platforms are leading to addictive behaviour in children. The investigation is being carried out under a mammoth law called the Digital Services Act (DSA) which forces the largest tech firms in the world to take more steps to protect European users online and remove any illegal content.
