EU Approves €319 Million State Aid to Austrian Semiconductor Factory
The project will make Villach the first site to produce the chips at scale on 300mm wafers, Infineon said.
- On Tuesday, German chipmaker Infineon announced an investment in its Villach, Austria, site to establish the world's first high-volume production of gallium nitride power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers.
- Gallium nitride, or GaN, switches faster and runs cooler than silicon; the shift to 300-millimeter wafers should reduce production costs by holding about 2.3 times as many chips as 200mm wafers currently used.
- The European Commission approved €319m in aid under the Chips Act; because Infineon will utilize existing cleanrooms in Villach, the expansion costs less than building a new facility.
- Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker called the project "one of the largest single investments in the history of Austria's high-tech industry," as Infineon targets chips for artificial intelligence data centers, electric cars, and energy networks.
- Infineon plans to begin production by the end of 2027 and continue investing until 2034, though formal approval from Austria's authorities is still pending; shares rose nearly 1% in Frankfurt on Tuesday.
