Tigray TV Station Hit by Drone, Rebels Advance in North Ethiopia

- On Sunday around 0600 GMT, a drone struck the headquarters of Tigrai TV in Mekelle, the Tigrayan capital. Photos showed the building's facade damaged and windows blown out, forcing the station with around 400 employees off-air.
- Heavy clashes between the Tigray People's Liberation Front and federal forces resumed this week, raising fears of a return to the 2020–2022 civil war. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres expressed concern Friday regarding reports of drone use and harm to civilians.
- Rebels seized the Afar town of Erebti on Sunday following heavy artillery fire and are advancing toward Afdeera, 100 kilometres east. A humanitarian source estimates at least 150,000 people have been displaced in Afar, though precise figures remain impossible to verify.
- The TPLF, claiming a "defensive war" against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, is pushing south through Amhara toward Addis Ababa. Their offensive in Afar aims to cut trade routes from Djibouti, which provides almost all of Ethiopia's international cargo, including fuel.

The headquarters of the local broadcaster in northern Ethiopia, Tigrai TV, was hit by a drone, journalists from the station told news agency AFP. The broadcaster is known as an important medium for the rebels in Tigray, where violence with the government army escalated again last week.
On 21 September, the Ethiopian federal authorities announced that they had suspended Tigrai TV "for an indefinite period" and prohibited any media from relaying its information.
