Eriksson, Oatway, Wilkie earn Canada’s first three medals of Paralympic Games
Canada earned three medals in alpine skiing and biathlon, including two silvers and one bronze, highlighting strong individual performances and comebacks at the Paralympics.
At Milan Cortina on Saturday, Kalle Eriksson, Kurt Oatway, and Wilkie earned Canada’s first medals, with Eriksson’s run opening the medal tally.
Eriksson, in his Paralympic debut, won silver in the men’s visually impaired downhill; Oatway returned from severe injuries after 2018 super-G gold, while Wilkie targeted a biathlon medal after seven previous Paralympic medals.
Oatway’s time was 1:19.42, narrowly behind Niels de Langen’s 1:19.24, with Jesper Pederson winning in 1:18.14, and Wilkie posted 18:46.4 over the 7.5-kilometre course.
Teammates said 'Both me and Sierra are on top of the world right now and still pumping', reflecting high team morale after the podium.
Looking ahead, Oatway suggested 'Maybe I’ll make another cycle' after his long recovery and recent medal win.
