This is the grave of Sam Jones. Born in 1847 in Oak Bowery, Alabama, Jones grew up fairly well off, the son of a lawyer and businessman. His mom died in 1855 and then family moved to his father’s home town of Cartersville, Georgia. The family was deeply Methodist, with ministers going back generations.
