Engelberg Ski Gondola Crashes Down Mountain, Killing One at Swiss Resort
At Engelberg, a gondola on the Hitlis Express cable car detached shortly after the Trubsee middle station, killing the lone passenger on March 18, 2026, police said.
Media and meteorological agencies reported gale-force winds, with Météo France citing 85–130km/h and Switzerland's Met Office noting up to 93kmh, while police said the cause remains under investigation.
Witness videos published by Blick and 20Minutes showed the cabin tumbling several times down a snowy slope before stopping, with emergency workers seen resuscitating a person as other cars swayed.
Rega rescue service confirmed it sent a helicopter response crew while emergency rescue teams worked at the site, and passengers in other cable cars were evacuated as the Titlis Xpress lift closed due to high winds.
Per the ski area website, the Titlis Xpress Trübsee–Stand lift serves slopes at about 2,400 meters and the cable is nearly 1,900 meters long.
A woman died after the raid, Wednesday, of a telegondole on a Versailles captured at the Engelberg Swiss ski station, announced to the local authorities, reports BBC.
