Social Isolation to Rise via Use of AI Companions, Elon Research Centers Find
Social isolation is expected to increase due to the growing use of AI companions, according to research by two Elon University research centers.
Twenty-Seven percent of American adults engage in significant emotional or social interactions online with AI large language models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot.
The director of Elon University's Imagining the Digital Future Center, Lee Rainie, notes that people have long adapted digital technologies for communication, learning, work, and entertainment.
More than half of those surveyed believe AI use will lead to greater social isolation, less trust in news media, harder job prospects, and increased mental health issues.
