Election officials to cooperate with federal monitors
Federal observers will monitor ballot counting and voting sites as officials seek to ensure accurate and secure election procedures.
On Election Day, Milwaukee and King County, Washington, will host federal election monitors to oversee polling operations. King County Elections Director Julie Wise confirmed the county received notification of the federal officials' presence.
Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act, the Department of Justice has deployed election observers to jurisdictions nationwide to ensure compliance with federal voting laws and protect voter accessibility.
Federal monitors must strictly adhere to state election rules and are prohibited from engaging with voters, remaining at designated locations without interfering with ballot casting.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison alleged the administration uses federal observers as a "weapon" against states, while New York Attorney General Letitia James defended the administration's deployment of monitors.
Federal oversight remains a point of contention between the administration and various states, as some jurisdictions continue to resist the presence of outside observers in their local election processes.
