Eldridge Has Three Points, Canada Beats Sweden 5-1 at Women’s Hockey Championship
Jessie Eldridge added an assist, and Ann-Renée Desbiens made 11 saves as Canada opened the world championship with a 5-1 win.
On Friday, Canada defeated Sweden 5-1 in the IIHF Women Ice Hockey World Championship Group opener in Herning, Denmark, with Jessie Eldridge scoring twice.
Eldridge anchored Canada's top line, filling the void left by injured captain Marie-Philip Poulin and star forward Sarah Fillier after recently signing a two-year contract with Professional Women Hockey League champion Montr Victoire.
Defender Cooper Kendall added a goal and assist, while Emily Clark and Rebecca Leslie also scored for Canada; Ann-Ren Desbiens made 11 saves against Ebba Svensson Traff's 33 stops.
Hanna Thuvik provided Sweden's only goal during the contest, marking Eldridge's first world championship appearance since 2022, when she recorded two points in seven games.
Canada next faces Japan on Sunday, continuing the tournament schedule for the Canadian squad as it seeks to maintain momentum from its decisive opening victory.
