The first victim of the Alaskan smallpox virus AKPV was an elderly man from the remote Kenai Peninsula who was hospitalized in January and died at the end of the month. This was reported by The Guardian, citing a bulletin from the Public Health Office. The virus was discovered in 2015 and only seven cases of AKPV are known so far.
