Was Eileen Gu’s Met Gala 2026 Dress Blowing Bubbles? Designer Iris Van Herpen Explains How
The Olympic freestyle skier’s tech-couture look featured 15,000 glass bubbles and took 2,550 hours to make, according to the designer.
On Monday, Olympic freestyle skier Eileen Gu arrived at the 2026 Met Gala wearing a futuristic Iris Van Herpen bubble dress covered in 15,000 glass bubbles. The custom look put an effervescent spin on the evening's "Costume Art" theme.
Dutch designer Herpen created the "Airo" gown using tech-couture, concealing microprocessors and bubble nozzles beneath the silhouette. An algorithmically engineered code times bubble releases to blend surrealism with movement.
Represented by IMG, the 22-year-old athlete has partnered with luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Victoria while securing six medals across the 2022 and 2026 Winter Olympics.
"It's a play on surrealism, it's a play on movement, it's a play on nature, on fun, on whimsy," Gu said of the design. She noted the gown reflects her career in extreme sports, where she works at "breaking boundaries."
A Stanford University student, Gu continues to navigate scrutiny regarding her decision to represent China at the Olympics. Earlier this year, she reported she was "physically assaulted" and received threats on campus.
