Edmonton will likely get its first shot of snow tonight or Wednesday
Environment Canada said up to 15 cm could fall, with the system expected to slow rush-hour traffic and leave roads quickly deteriorating.
Environment and Climate Change Canada warned Edmonton on Wednesday of its first significant snowfall, with a "long duration snowfall event" expected to persist until Thursday morning.
The province's balmy fall is ending as ECCC issued special weather statements for central Alberta, where total snowfall amounts may reach 15 cm by Thursday morning.
Officials warn the snowfall will significantly impact rush-hour traffic in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Leduc, and Camrose; drivers are urged to allow extra time for travel.
Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 40 km/h, with periods of snow continuing into Thursday night as conditions deteriorate rapidly across the region.
Despite the current winter weather, ECCC indicated a warm-up is expected by Halloween and early November as the province transitions from its mild autumn season.
