A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Sumbawa region of Indonesia on Sunday, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences , with its epicenter located 14 kilometers southwest of Kodi, Southwest Sumba.
Strong shaking lasted approximately one minute across Southwest Sumba Regency, West Sumba Regency, and West Manggarai Regency, though the National Disaster Management Agency reported residents remained calm with no panic.
Berton SP Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB's Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, stated, "The earthquake posed no tsunami threat," with no reports of damage or casualties so far.
Field assessments are currently underway by the local Regional Disaster Management Agency , while officials advise residents to avoid buildings with cracks and stay away from the coastline due to potential aftershocks.
Residents should remain calm and ensure information comes from official sources while disregarding unverified rumors, as the BNPB continues monitoring the affected regencies for public safety.
