Japan earthquake: 7.1 magnitude quake hits Kyushu, tsunami alert issued
- On Tuesday, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's southwestern Kumamoto Prefecture at 4:28 PM, triggering a temporary tsunami warning the Japan Meteorological Agency later lifted.
- Located along the 'Ring of Fire,' Japan accounts for about 20 per cent of the world's earthquakes magnitude 6.0 or more, and Kumamoto previously suffered a massive earthquake 10 years ago.

- Residents in areas that felt the largest tremors must beware of further strong quakes and landslides for about a week, a JMA official advised; separately, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck China's Qinghai Province, roughly 995km away.
