DWTS’ Val Chmerkovskiy Apologizes to Carrie Ann Inaba After Will Smith Oscars Slap Comment
The pro dancer said he regretted the deleted post and said he contacted Carrie Ann Inaba directly after backlash over the remark.
- Val Chmerkovskiy, a Dancing With the Stars professional, publicly apologized Thursday for a deleted TikTok post referencing Will Smith's 2022 Oscars slap, which viewers interpreted as a threat toward judge Carrie Ann Inaba following her critique of his wife, Jenna Johnson.
- The controversy began Tuesday during the 'Super Bowl Night' episode when judge Inaba docked points from Johnson and partner Harry Shum Jr. for performing an illegal lift during their samba routine.
- Chmerkovskiy posted "You almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom last night" on Wednesday, a comment widely viewed as referencing Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony.
- Inaba addressed the incident Thursday on Instagram asking, "So this is what we are doing now?" before Chmerkovskiy contacted her personally to apologize and issued a formal statement on Instagram Stories.
- As of Friday, neither ABC nor the show's producers have released an official statement regarding the social media dispute, leaving unclear whether the incident will be addressed on the upcoming live broadcast.
