Dutch firm uses AI to help drone systems 'talk' on Ukraine's battlefield
The system links radars, sensors and interceptor drones, and Intelic says it can cut the time commanders need to respond by minutes.
- In late September at a Dutch airbase, software company Intelic tested its AI-powered system, Nexus, integrating multiple radars, sensors, and cameras to identify and intercept enemy projectiles automatically.
- Ukrainian brigades often deploy diverse drone types from different vendors that do not 'talk' to each other, prompting Anika Kempter, a senior software engineer at Intelic, to stress the need for a unifying system.
- Replacing human communication with autonomous systems shaves minutes off response times, potentially saving lives. Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi reported that in the first three weeks of September, Russia launched 2,100 drones and 136 missiles, killing 288 people.
- Intelic, holding a €30-million contract with the Dutch Defence Ministry, is rolling out its command-and-control software in Ukraine to supplement Delta, the country's existing advanced battlefield management system.
- As drone technology evolves rapidly, Intelic CEO and founder Maurits Korthals Altes noted that autonomous systems are necessary to intercept high-speed targets, with software bridging gaps in defense hardware upgrades.
