BIRMINGHAM. When Mondo Duplantis, 26, jumps for gold, he does so with sadness in his heart. His biggest supporter, grandmother Ingrid Hedlund, died in July. “We think of her every day and I will jump for her,” says Duplantis.

Armand Duplantis is sad before the European Championship. Grandma Ingrid Hedlund has fallen asleep, 92 years old. "Of course I want to honor grandma with many victories," Mondo writes in a text message to Södra Dalarnes tidning.
Armand Duplantis has had emotional weeks behind him. Besides unexpected defeats, injuries and his wedding, he has to cope with a severe loss. His grandmother died.
