Drunk raccoon behind liquor store rampage suspected of other 'break-ins'
The raccoon, dubbed 'trashed panda,' has committed at least three break-ins in a Hanover County shopping complex, including a liquor store, a karate studio, and the DMV.
- On Nov. 29, Animal Protection Officer Samantha Martin found a raccoon had broken into the Ashland ABC liquor store, pulled bottles off shelves and passed out in the bathroom.
- On Thursday, Dec. 11, Martin told the Hear In Hanover podcast, `Supposedly, this is the third break-in he's had`, including a karate studio and the DMV, she said.
- HCAP said the raccoon was very intoxicated when found, and shelter staff crated him to sober overnight before Martin released him about one mile from the shopping complex.
- The viral story prompted the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority to create three cocktails, while Hanover County's 'Trashed Panda' merchandise raised $207,000 and more than $180,000 for the animal shelter.
- With relocation ruled out, Martin warns the masked bandit may return, saying, `We don't relocate him, because that's a death sentence for raccoons`, and he keeps getting back into the shopping centre.
