DRPS Deputy Chief retires after misconduct
LECA found misconduct under the Community Safety and Policing Act after Kirkpatrick allegedly used a racially inappropriate term at an internal staff meeting.
Durham Police Deputy Chief Chris Kirkpatrick is retiring after an investigation by the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency found his actions constituted misconduct under the Community Safety and Policing Act.
An incident in February led to Kirkpatrick's suspension after he allegedly used a "racially inappropriate term" during a meeting of the Afro-Caribbean Canadian Internal Support Network.
Following "careful review and deliberation" of the LECA investigation, the Durham Regional Police Service Board and Kirkpatrick agreed to conclude their employment relationship.
In a statement, the Board emphasized its commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace, stating that holding leadership to high standards is fundamental to public trust.
Hiring two new Deputy Chiefs, the Police Service is moving forward after Kirkpatrick's departure, having announced in June that it is filling leadership roles.
