Yorkshire Enters DROUGHT After Region Suffers One of the Driest Summers
Authorities said the move follows the fifth driest April to September on record, with river and groundwater levels too low to recover quickly.
- On Friday, the Environment Agency officially declared a drought across Yorkshire following months of unusually dry weather, though water restrictions are not currently needed for residents.
- Vicki Townend, area environment manager for the Environment Agency in Yorkshire, stated the region experienced its "fifth driest April to September on record," with low river flows and groundwater levels triggering the drought status.
- Yorkshire Water data shows the region received just over half the normal long-term average rainfall in September, placing "continued pressure on reservoirs, groundwater sources and rivers across the region," Andy Shaw noted.
- Despite the declaration, Yorkshire Water does not expect to introduce restrictions, as teams work "around the clock to reduce leakage, maximise water supplies and ensure homes and businesses across Yorkshire continue to receive the water they need."
- Water Minister Emma Hardy warned the situation remains "serious," noting the government's strengthened Water Bill will start a "decade-long journey" to build nine new major reservoirs and secure long-term water resilience.
