Drivers who killed mother and young daughter as they raced are jailed

Judge Ray Singh said the men chose speed and competition over safety, and both must serve two-thirds of their prison terms.

  • Two racing motorists were jailed for over 25 years on Monday at Leeds Crown Court after Judge Ray Singh convicted Hardeep Bhachu and Jasskamal Riyat of causing the deaths of mother Justyna Hulboj and her four-year-old daughter Lena Czepczor.
  • The fatal collision occurred January 16, 2023, when Bhachu lost control of his white Audi while racing Riyat's BMW M135i on the A61 Scott Hall Road in Leeds as the victims walked to nursery.
  • Witnesses testified the drivers were 'obviously racing.' Judge Singh noted that about 65m before impact, Bhachu was travelling at about 89mph in an urban zone transitioning to 30mph.
  • Riyat received 16 years imprisonment while Bhachu was sentenced to 12 years, with both handed six-year driving bans and required extended testing. Insp Paul Conroy of West Yorkshire Police's Major Collision Enquiry Team said the sentencing marks 'the end of a long criminal justice process.'
  • Dominik Czepczor, Hulboj's fiancé, said his 'whole world collapsed in one second,' while Judge Singh remarked that 'nothing this court can do can restore those lives' after the victims had been 'simply walking to school.
