Drivers warned they could be fined £50 by using 1 car feature unnecessarily
Select Car Leasing says most drivers must switch fog lights off manually once visibility improves or face a £50 penalty.
Drivers face a £50 penalty for leaving fog lights on when visibility improves, as Rule 236 of the Official Highway Code aims to prevent dazzling other road users.
Rule 27 of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations Act also prohibits unnecessary fog light use, which Graham Conway, managing director at Select Car Leasing, said causes "undue dazzle or discomfort" to other drivers.
Rear fog lights can obscure brake lights and appear brighter than normal, with the dazzle effect worsening on wet roads where light reflects off tarmac, making it crucial drivers switch them off.
Conway warned motorists against relying on automatic lighting systems, saying "Don't rely on your car's automatic lighting system" and advising drivers to manually trigger fog lights to avoid fines.
National Highways suggests drivers stop and listen at junctions when visibility is reduced, as "fog can also make roads slippery," while Arctic air may arrive later this month, compounding hazards.
