Waymo Approved to Start Rides in Sacramento, San Diego and Expand in Los Angeles, Bay Area
The approval lets Waymo charge for fully driverless rides across 18 counties as it prepares gradual rollout in new California markets.
On Friday, the California Public Utilities Commission approved Waymo's application to expand its driverless ride-hailing service across 18 counties in California, including Sacramento and San Diego.
This approval follows a seven-month regulatory review of a filing Waymo submitted in January, during which the company addressed safety protocols and rider procedures required by regulators.
Waymo spokesperson Sandy Karp cited data from more than 220 million fully autonomous miles, claiming vehicles have been involved in an estimated 94% fewer serious-injury collisions than human drivers.
Future service expansion will be 'guided by its safety framework,' with the company prioritizing rider-only service in San Diego later this summer and technology validation in Sacramento.
Scaling operations further, the Alphabet-owned company is targeting 1 million rides a week by the end of this year, tripling its service area in regions surrounding Los Angeles and San Francisco.
