Driver who crashed while gambling on mobile is jailed after pregnant woman suffered premature birth
Jack Bentley was jailed for 28 months after causing serious injuries, including a premature birth and fractured pelvis, by driving distracted while gambling online on his phone.
- Derby Crown Court sentenced the prison officer on February 11 to two years and four months and disqualified him from driving for three years and two months after he pleaded guilty.
- An examination of his phone revealed phone data showed Bentley used online gambling sites and spent almost the entirety of a two-hour journey from Derby to Blackpool playing games and placing bets.
- On the A50 in Derby, dashcam shows Bentley’s Ford Focus travelling at 71mph, swerving between lanes and veering onto the grass verge between junctions 6 and 5 around 6.45pm before hitting stationary traffic.
- At 33 weeks pregnant, she had an emergency C-section and a fractured pelvis; her baby weighed four pounds and spent weeks in intensive care, as she described in a victim impact statement.
- Two children and a family pet were among the injured, and Bentley was arrested at the scene while dashcam footage showed extensive injuries and phone analysis revealed he was distracted.
