Driver dies after hitting tree following police pursuit
The force said the driver died after a marked police car pursuit and has referred the crash for independent oversight.
A 41-year-old driver died after his Audi struck a tree near Caddington in Bedfordshire on Saturday following a police pursuit that began in Dunstable.
Bedfordshire Police officers spotted the grey Audi on High Street South without headlights and signaled the driver to stop; the motorist refused, triggering a 15-minute pursuit along the A5183 towards Markyate.
At approximately 22:37 BST, the vehicle left the carriageway and collided with a tree near Caddington. Officers provided first aid, but the driver was pronounced dead shortly before 23:30.
Bedfordshire Police referred the crash to The Independent Office "in line with standard protocols," and an investigation has been launched into the fatal incident.
This incident follows a separate pursuit-related death on 24 Aug in Stratford-upon-Avon, where a 62-year-old Ford driver died after colliding with a pursued Audi. The Independent Office is investigating both cases.
