Driver charged in Okanagan Granfondo crash that killed cyclist
Police say the case follows a year-long investigation that found substantial evidence before prosecutors approved charges.
- On Monday, Jonathan Shane Crant was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and two counts causing bodily harm in connection with the 2025 Okanagan Granfondo fatality.
- The collision occurred on July 13, 2025, near White Lake Road in Kaleden, where a driver struck three cyclists during the race; Lower Mainland volunteer Ava Choy died, while two others sustained serious injuries.
- Penticton RCMP Staff Sergeant Scott Hanry described the case as requiring "significant investigative efforts to collect, analyze and assess evidence," with findings submitted to the Crown before charges were approved.
- While the file remains before the courts, online records show no scheduled appearance date for Crant; separately, organizers discontinued the Okanagan Granfondo indefinitely after 14 years, stating the decision was unrelated to the fatality.
- Court records also indicate Crant faced separate charges in Oliver on April 20, 2026, for driving while prohibited or with a suspended licence, as police stated the investigation remains ongoing.
