- On Sunday, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized 5.83 kg of foreign-origin gold worth Rs 8.98 crore near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, from a car traveling from Kolkata to Hyderabad.
- Smuggled through the India-Bangladesh border, the gold was concealed in a specially fabricated cavity beneath the front co-passenger seat, destined for Hyderabad.
- Following a prolonged highway pursuit on the night of October 8-9, authorities intercepted the vehicle. "From that secret cavity, three packets containing 5,832.90 grams of 24 carat/999 purity foreign origin Gold valued at Rs 8.98 crores market price were eventually recovered," officials said.
- Both occupants were arrested and produced before a jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded them to judicial custody under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
- DRI officers are attempting to determine the gold's origin and destination while investigating to identify the kingpin behind the smuggling racket.
