Drew Brees Almost Came Out of Retirement for 1 Team Last Season
- Following Bo Nix's fractured ankle in the AFC Playoffs, Denver Broncos coaches reached out to Hall of Famer Drew Brees about coming out of retirement for the AFC Championship Game against New England.
- Then-Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive assistant Pete Carmichael initiated the contact without informing head coach Sean Payton, leveraging their shared history with Brees from the New Orleans Saints.
- After testing his physical readiness, Brees ultimately declined following significant discomfort in his wrist during the workout, according to sources familiar with the situation.
- With Brees unavailable, the Broncos turned to backup Jarrett Stidham, who completed 17 of 31 passes for 133 yards in a 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots, ending Denver's season.
- The pursuit followed Philip Rivers' return for the Indianapolis Colts. Brees, who retired in 2021, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last month and now serves as a game analyst for FOX.
