Dramatic Moment Fisherman Is Rescued After 15 Days Trapped in Underwater Cave
Search teams from four countries found him after 15 days in a cenote, where he survived on water, sleep and prayer in total darkness.
Mexican fisherman Erasto Crisanto Valdez was rescued on August 7 after disappearing for 15 days in a cenote near San Fransisco, Paz, Oaxaca, found dehydrated and severely malnourished.
On July 23, Valdez vanished during a fishing expedition while attempting to catch snook, becoming trapped in a pitch-black cave where he lost all sense of time in complete darkness.
American cave-diving instructor Harry Gust led a multi-national search including explorers from Germany and the Dominican Republic, discovering Valdez after 75 minutes, 100 metres inside a "large dry cave."
Trapped more than 300 ft deep, Valdez survived by drinking, sleeping, and praying in total darkness. Gust told Divernet, "I was coming back for him with more help."
Thousands of underwater cenotes exist on Mexico's Yucatán peninsula, historically used by Mayan communities for water and sacrificial offerings, presenting ongoing challenges for explorers and rescue teams in the region.
During a fishing day with his father, Erasto Crisanto Valdez ended up trapped in the dark and without food.More than two weeks later, the young man was found dehydrated at 100 meters deep.
