'My Strength Has yet to Fully Return': Mahathir Thanks Malaysians for Prayers After Hasmah's Death
Mahathir thanked supporters and funeral helpers, saying he has tried to return to work but still lacks the strength.
On Monday, Oct 19, former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad said he attempted to return to his office over the past two days but found his "strength has not quite returned."
The 101-year-old's absence follows the death of his wife, Tun Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, who died at age 100 on Sept 28 at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur.
Siti Hasmah was laid to rest at Pusara Negara in Putrajaya on the same day, and Mahathir expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who assisted with the funeral arrangements.
Mahathir also apologized for being unable to personally respond to the many greetings, waves, and messages of condolence he received from the public following his wife's passing.
Amidst his "profound and painful sorrow," Mahathir said he remains grateful to Allah for having entrusted Hasmah to him for so long, until this stage of his life.
