Double decker bus crashes into bridge in Manchester

ECCLES, GREATER MANCHESTER, JUL 21 – Fifteen people were injured after a double-decker bus failed to heed height warnings and struck the Bridgewater Canal aqueduct, tearing off its roof, officials said.

  • On Monday afternoon, July 21, at approximately 3pm, a double-decker bus struck a bridge near where Barton Road meets Trafford Road in Eccles, Manchester.
  • Emergency services received a call at 15:06, declared a major incident, and dispatched ten ambulances, advanced paramedics, HART, and North West Air Ambulance to the scene.
  • The collision ripped off the bus roof, injured 15 people including one critically and two seriously hurt, and caused road closures with public advised to avoid the area.
  • The initial emergency team arrived promptly at 15:10, and all 15 patients received treatment before being transported to either Salford Royal Hospital or Manchester Royal Infirmary.
  • North West Ambulance Service has withdrawn the major incident declaration while still providing support to Greater Manchester Police and Stagecoach as a prompt investigation is ongoing.
