DOJ targets healthcare fraud in California, Arizona, Nevada

The U.S. Department of Justice created the West Coast healthcare Fraud Strike Force to combat California, Arizona, and Nevada, as Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald noted a "significant and accelerating increase in healthcare fraud."
Scott Lampert, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services acting deputy inspector general for investigations, warned that "emerging threats" are "targeting billions of taxpayer dollars" through sham operations using increasingly sophisticated methods.
Timothy Courchaine, U.S. attorney for the District of Arizona, cited disrupted fraud schemes worth over a billion dollars, while Craig Missakian, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of California, labeled Silicon Valley "ground zero" for technology-driven Medicare fraud.
Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford last month charged two Nevadans with defrauding Medicaid of at least $2 billion, while Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes welcomed federal support, noting Arizona is "on the front lines" of fighting fraud.
Since 2023, Mayes has indicted 166 individuals and recovered more than $139 million, while prosecutors secured convictions against Farrukh Jarar Ali for billing around $650 million and sentenced Gehrke and King for causing more than $1.2 billion in losses.
