‘Dixie’ map that divided US into North and South is going up for auction

Brunk Auctions says the hand-drawn map could draw bids from collectors and institutions after a 1982 sale set a record for an American map.

  • A hand-drawn chart of the Mason-Dixon Line goes to auction Thursday in a livestreamed event hosted by Brunk Auctions in Asheville, North Carolina.
  • Surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon originally drew the map to settle a border dispute between the colonies of Maryland and Pennsylvania.
  • The 76-inch by 6.5-inch document, initially given to attorney Benjamin Chew, became synonymous with the 1820 Missouri Compromise and divisions that exploded into civil war four decades later.
  • Late publisher Malcolm Forbes purchased the map in 1982 for $360,000, outbidding the Library, which currently lacks the budget to bid again.
  • Lauren Brunk, vice president of Brunk Auctions, estimates the map could fetch between $800,000 and $1.2 million, hoping a 'patriot' will purchase it for the Library.
