Keir Starmer and Trump are ‘together’ on securing peace for Ukraine
Starmer and Trump back a US-drafted 28-point peace plan amid European calls for revisions addressing territorial and military limits in Ukraine.
- On Sunday, Sir Keir Starmer and President Donald Trump agreed to work together at a `critical moment` to bring about a `just and lasting peace` for Ukraine, Downing Street said.
- A US-backed 28-point plan emerged after negotiators Steve Witkoff and Kremlin representative Kirill Dmitriev drafted an updated and refined peace framework with Kyiv excluded.
- The plans differ on force size and guarantees, with the US proposing a 600,000 peacetime cap for Ukraine's military and Europe suggesting 800,000, while an Article five security guarantee is integral to Washington's proposal and European leaders reject unfreezing $100 billion of frozen Russian assets.
- Accelerating after a deadline threat, negotiators reported talks sped up over 96 hours after Mr Trump set a Thursday deadline, and President Volodymyr Zelensky said talks would continue on Monday.
- European leaders have publicly pushed back, warning the US plan risked Ukrainian capitulation; Ursula von der Leyen said Sunday that `borders cannot be changed by force`, while Friedrich Merz expressed scepticism about meeting Trump's deadline.
