‘Difficult decision’: Cue receivers’ big call
Receivers said higher overheads outweighed sales gains as they seek a buyer and keep the brands trading.
On Friday, administrators from FTI Consulting announced the closure of five stores following Cue Clothing's entry into receivership on Tuesday. The iconic Australian fashion chain operates women's labels Cue and Veronika Maine.
British investor Hilco Capital purchased the chain last year intending to restore profitability, but receivers noted recent sales improvements could not offset rising overhead costs. The business became unsustainable.
The closures include Woden Cue, Parramatta Cue, Melbourne Central Cue, Armadale Cue, and Mosman Veronica Maine. Around 50 stores remain across Australia as the company navigates restructuring.
Managers Kate Warwick and Vaughan Strawbridge from FTI Consulting are assessing the business structure while seeking a new owner. The company continues trading as administrators pursue a sale process.
Australian fashion retailers face intense pressure from online competitors like Shein, prompting significant industry consolidation. This follows the collapse of Mosaic Brands and Colette Hayman, which entered administration in recent years.
