DHS shutdown imminent after Senate Democrats block Homeland Security bill
- On Thursday, Feb. 12, the Senate failed to advance a DHS funding bill, losing 52-47 and funding expires Friday at midnight, risking a shutdown.
- Schumer and other Democrats said they will not approve funding unless ICE is reformed after the Jan. 24 shooting of Alex Pretti, demanding judicial warrants, visible ID, body cameras, and enforcement limits.
- Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., was the only Democrat to vote with Republicans, while Democrats objected on the Senate floor and negotiations may continue over the weekend.
- Federal agencies including the Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and Federal Emergency Management Agency could see reduced services and unpaid workers, and with Congress scheduled recess next week, a shutdown could last at least a week.
- The White House sent its most recent offer late Wednesday, but talks remain stalled and lawmakers in both chambers were on notice to return if a deal is struck.
