Detroit judge, 3 others charged in alleged scheme to steal thousands from vulnerable and incapacitated people

Four defendants allegedly embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from incapacitated wards using guardianship roles, spending on personal luxuries and investments, FBI said.

  • On Friday, federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment charging Andrea Bradley-Baskin, judge, 36th District Court, Nancy Williams, Avery Bradley, and Dwight Rashad with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering in a scheme targeting incapacitated adults.
  • Prosecutors say the defendants exploited the probate system to divert ward funds for personal use from January 2017 to July 2024, and the FBI began probing in fall 2024.
  • The indictment alleges Bradley-Baskin spent $70,000 on a stake in Chick's Bar, and more than $247,000 on luxuries and properties, including rent on two properties.
  • Chief Judge William McConico suspended Bradley-Baskin, saying `This action is taken to uphold public confidence in the judiciary during this period`; she was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond while the investigation continues.
  • A lien filed on May 13 targets a Coolidge Highway office building in Oak Park owned by Twitty Investments LLC, potentially forfeitable as proceeds of bribery and fraud, with over 1,000 cases linked to Guardian & Associates.
