Detention hearing continued to next week for suspect in Trump threats
Defense counsel won more time to prepare as Swain remains jailed on charges he threatened President Donald Trump, authorities said.
On Thursday, the federal detention hearing for Army veteran Daniel Swain was continued until next week to allow defense counsel time to prepare.
Authorities arrested Swain in Apex on April 28 after discovering threats scrawled on his vehicle, which he allegedly drove toward Washington to confront Republican President Donald Trump.
Messages on the vehicle read "headed to WSH to kill the Pres" and "5 dead 5 years," reflecting Swain's belief that his military family members died under suspicious circumstances.
Facing a federal charge of communicating threats to the President, Swain could receive five years in prison upon conviction, while also facing local charges in Wake County District Court.
The District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina scheduled the next hearing for May 15 at 9 a.m. in the Terry Sanford Federal Building in Raleigh; Swain will remain jailed until then.
