MCG Farewell for Footy Great and MND Campaigner Daniher
The service will follow the Big Freeze match, and the family has asked mourners to donate to FightMND instead of sending flowers.
On Thursday, the Victorian government confirmed a state funeral for Neale Daniher will be held at the MCG on Wednesday, June 10, at 1pm, following the 65-year-old's death on Monday.
Before his 2013 diagnosis, Daniher played 82 games for Essendon and coached Melbourne for 211 games, including the 2000 AFL grand final; he later called the incurable condition "The Beast."
Co-Founding FightMND, Daniher led the organization to commit more than $141 million to medical research. Premier Jacinta Allan said, "Neale championed resilience and determination in every aspect of his life."
The funeral occurs two days after the annual Big Freeze at the King's Birthday blockbuster between Melbourne and Collingwood. The Daniher family requested donations to FightMND in lieu of flowers.
Players will wear black armbands across all seven AFL matches this weekend in tribute to Daniher. AFL CEO Andrew Dillon called for the league to recognize his extraordinary contribution to the community.
