Police Warn Against 'Door Kicking' Trend After Man Kicks in Door at Washington Home
Deputies say the prank caused about $2,000 in damage and left a surveillance image of the suspect, who fled with two others.
On Saturday, May 9, a man approached a Gig Harbor, Washington, home on 43rd Ave and kicked the front door, causing about $2,000 in damage before fleeing with two other suspects. Pierce County Sheriff deputies are seeking the suspect.
Investigators believe the incident stemmed from the so-called 'TikTok door kick challenge,' a social media trend where participants bang on doors before running away. The PCSO issued a warning Monday regarding the prank's risks.
Surveillance footage recorded the suspect and two accomplices fleeing the scene. The homeowner reported hearing 'three loud bangs' before the door frame shattered, according to the PCSO.
Deputy Carly Cappetto warned that homeowners may react with force, stating, 'They will shoot if they feel like someone is breaking into their house.' She urged parents to discuss prank dangers with children.
While similar pranks have occurred throughout Pierce County with no reported injuries so far, past incidents elsewhere have turned fatal. In Houston last summer, an 11-year-old boy was killed after knocking on a door and running away as part of the challenge.
