Will Democrats Keep Oregon Legislature Supermajority? Look at Races
Democrats led in several close contests as they sought enough seats to keep their three-fifths edge in both chambers, election results showed.
On Tuesday, Oregon Democrats surged in multiple legislative races, putting the party on track to maintain and expand supermajority control in both the Oregon House and Oregon Senate for the 2027 session.
Maintaining these majorities ensures Democrats hold the three-fifths supermajority necessary to pass new taxes without Republican support, though they lack the two-thirds majority required to maintain a quorum if Republicans walk out.
In key contests, Salem City Councilor Virginia Stapleton led in the 11th Senate District, Democrat Denise Krause led in the 3rd Senate District, and 25-year-old Hank Sanders held a lead in the 52nd House District.
The party appears poised to secure 39 of the 60 House seats and 19 of the 30 Senate seats, potentially surpassing the previous record of 38 House seats won by Democrats in 1974.
Political analysts noted that outcomes favoring Democrats suggest voter "dissatisfaction with Republican lawmakers in Washington, D.C.," while results favoring Republicans would have indicated voters were more dissatisfied with the Democratic majority in Salem.
